5th Grade Math

The fifth grade math program uses a balanced approach to instruction which includes basic computation skills, exploratory, and problem solving approaches. The foundation of the program is the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Content and Standards for Mathematical Practice. This course will allow students to develop skills and habits that will help them gain a deeper understanding of concepts not only in mathematics but across the curriculum.

5th Grade Social Studies

The fifth graders will focus on the United States this academic year.  I’m very excited for the new social studies program we have for the 5th graders.  Our new series is called myWorld Interactive.  It incorporates technology and the students may highlight and write in their new text workbooks.  Students begin with the Native Americans, then will study the 13 colonies, the American Revolution, the Civil War, and the building of a new nation.  The primary intention of the program is to have the students acquire a sense of the historical development of the United States as a nation, as well as a world power.  They will also continue to work on their geography, mapping, and timeline skills. Throughout the year they will also explore and discuss current events. They will be reading Junior Scholastic during the year.  They will also be answering geography questions related to the United States. This year, with the help of Mrs. Callahan I will also be using technology more in the classroom setting.

Students learn to explore cause-and-effect relationships; compare past and present events; and make and use timelines, graphs, charts, and maps to interpret historical data.

Units of Study, including, but not limited to:

The First Americans

Age of Exploration

Settling the colonies

Life in the colonies

The American Revolution

A New Nation

Westward Expansion

The Civil War and Reconstruction
